The Northern Redbacks staged a three-goal comeback to beat Balcatta 3-2 at Grindleford Reserve on Sunday afternoon.

Two goals to Ellie La Monte put Balcatta in the box seat, however two goals to Carla Bennett either side of a Renee Leota strike gave the away side the comeback win.

Defeated coach Andrew Di Carlo said his side had let the game slip away.

“We just gave them too much of the ball in the midfield I think, and they just dictated play from there.”

“They are a good team and they showed their experience.”

Redbacks coach Tim Hodgson thought his side had dominated the match.

“I thought we were quite comfortable in the first half,” he said. “The goals that were scored against us were against the play.”

“ I thought we controlled most of the game anyway, so it was a matter of sticking to what we were doing and it (the result) was always going to come, or at least I felt so.”

Both sides found themselves amongst the chances early but Balcatta took the lead in the 12th minute when La Monte’s corner kick beat everyone and found its way into the back of the net.

La Monte doubled Balcatta’s lead in the 21st minute, latching onto a through-ball and smashing the ball into the net.

It didn’t take long for the Redbacks to hit back, and Bennett showed her class in the 26th minute, picking up the ball outside the box and curling it into the net.

It only took 5 minutes of the second half for the Redbacks to level the scores through Leota, who calmly poked a through ball into the net for the Redback’s second in the 50th.

As the half went on, Balcatta began to sit back and abandon the pressing that led them to their success in the first half.

It cost them in the 59th minute when Carla Bennett received the ball on the left wing with time and space and her long-range shot beat the keeper to snatch the lead for the Redbacks.

Balcatta had their chances to level, but couldn’t make them count, allowing the Redbacks to walk away as narrow victors.

The Redbacks will hope to take their form into next week’s top of the table clash with Queens Park, while Balcatta will look to rebound after a run of tough fixtures.
