Forrestfield go second after seven goal thriller

Report by Matthew Corvi

Forrestfield United have moved closer to promotion from the All Flags State League Division One by beating Dianella White Eagles 4-3 in a thrilling encounter at Hartfield Park on Saturday night.

Despite the visitors scoring three goals, two goals from Rhys Loxley in the second half ensured Forrestfield claimed all three points.

Forrestfield coach Rod Banjac was ecstatic with his side’s performance, praising the performance as the best game of the season.

“This is the best game I’ve seen from the boys all year, everyone was up for it and the whole club came together” he said.

“I could not be more proud of the boys, the performance tonight was everything we have been working towards for the last four years.”

Dianella opened the scoring against the run of play, with Andres scoring a fantastic free-kick into the top corner from outside the box in the 16th minute, giving Forrestfield goalkeeper Luke Martino no chance.

Forrestfield responded with two quick goals of their own when Ben Rogers found himself free in the box to put the ball in the back of the net and Liam Merrigan tapping in a well-placed cross.

Dianella were given a way back into the game in the 45th minute with the referee awarding a penalty for handball in the box. Andres stepped up to ensure both teams went into the break level.

Forrestfield started the second half the stronger of the two and regained the advantage in the 52nd minute when Loxley got on the scoresheet.

Things got worse for Dianella when Ibrahim Hamad received a second yellow card in the 58th minute.

Despite a heroic performance from Driscol in the Dianella goal, Loxley grabbed his second for Forrestfield in the 83rd minute, seemingly putting the game beyond doubt for Forrestfield.

Undeterred by being down to ten-men, Dianella pushed Forrestfield all the way, with Andres scoring his third goal in the 85th minute to ensure a nail biting finale.

With the final attack of the game, Dianella sent their whole team up into the box, but a brave save from Martino ensured Forrestfield would claim all three points.

Dianella coach Robbie Dunn was pleased with his side’s performance, but rued the result.

“Gutsy performance by the team, I thought we were the better side tonight” he said.

“They managed to always catch up on the break, and Forrestfield were fantastic in that aspect.”
