Gwelup Croatia recovered from going an early goal down to thrash Dianella White Eagles 4-1 in the second round of the State League Division One on Saturday.
Dianella took the lead at Wishart Street after only five minutes when former Cockburn striker Angel Andres lashed in a lovely finish from the edge of the area with the game still in its infancy Being such a fierce derby, though, the early strike set the trend and Gwelup replied just four minutes later when Kwangmook Lim equalised for Gwelup.
From here the game settled down, with the exception of a couple of early bookings, as both sides looked for a break. Dianella came close twice with goalmouth scrambles but the resolute Gwelup defence held firm.
And that proved pivotal nine minutes before half-time when a cross from the lively Noah Shamaui, who had missed a sitter moments before, was misjudged by Dianella keeper Joel Driscoll and David Heagney tapped home a simple goal at the far post.
In the second half Dianella poked and prodded in search of an equaliser but lacked the final ball. And Gwelup put the game to bed with two goals in the space of two minutes. The first came on 64 minutes when Bobby Wilson headed down a corner to Heagney, who in turn set up Jay Lang to tap in from close range.
The next goal was lovely play from Gwleup, who launched an attack down the left with Shamaui again putting in a pinpoint cross to Heagney, who finished well for his brace to make it 4-1.
Gwelup coach Taki Nikolaidis was unsurprisingly happy with his side’s efforts, saying that “over the 90 minutes only one team was in it” and that his side had “stuck to the game plan very well”.
White Eagles coach Robbie Dunn was philosophical about the result, especially following their 6-0 defeat of Western Knights in Round One. “They had it more than us,” he said, adding that Gwelup had had a great game plan which frustrated his side.
