Greaves at the double for Leeming

Report by Edward Nixon

Leeming Strikers maintained their unbeaten start to the Belt up. Amateur Premier Division with a 3-0 win at home to Hamersley Rovers on Sunday.

After dropping their first points of the campaign against Subiaco last time out, Leeming returned to winning ways thanks to Ben Greaves’ brace and a smart finish from Leonard Fernandes. It was the Strikers’ fourth victory in five.

“It’s good to get on the scoreboard and after last week’s poor performance to get a result,” Greaves said.

“We were solid at the back; a clean sheet does the job.”

Keen to make up for their Round Four draw, Leeming jumped out of the blocks in the opening five minutes and striker Brad North’s close-range effort was smothered by Hamersley goalkeeper Carl Diggins.

There was nothing Diggins could do just six minutes later, however, as Greaves’ cross from the right found Fernandes, who slotted the ball into the back of the net with a cool first-time finish.

The Strikers came close to doubling their advantage from a set-piece as Diggins unconvincingly kept out Karl Gorman’s free-kick.

Leeming’s pressure paid off just after the break when North’s mistimed control was recovered by Greaves, who rifled his shot into the back of the net from outside the box.

There was plenty of niggle in this affair, with seven players cautioned in a fiery contest.

“That’s just part of the game,” Greaves said.

Hamersley saw more of the ball after the break but failed to threaten Jordan Jones’ goal as Leeming kept their second clean sheet of the season.

Rovers substitute Tom Dipetro had an effort with his first touch of the game in a rare sight at goal for the visitors.

It was Leeming who extended their advantage, however, as Greaves grabbed his second after rounding Diggins before finishing into an empty net.

“What can I say, credit to Leeming,” Hamersley coach Brad Brooks said.

Rovers were reduced to 10 men in the dying stages when Bankue Manuer given his marching orders for a deliberate stamp.

The defeat was Hamersley’s third of the season, while Leeming stay top.

Hamersley returns home in Round Six to host the Southern Spirit, with Leeming travelling to take on North Perth United.
