West Aussie Aquino makes Young Matildas debut

Football Federation Australia News

West Australian goalkeeper Morgan Aquino kept a clean sheet on her debut for the Westfield Young Matildas, who built on their opening group match win over Malaysia by defeating Timor Leste 9-0 in their second Group A fixture of the 2018 AFF Women’s Championship in Indonesia.

Australia dominated possession from the beginning, and it took just 11 minutes to open the scoring through Cortnee Vine. She doubled her, and the Young Matildas’ tally in the 18th minute to make it 2-0.

Despite domination of possession and field position, Australia had to remain patient and probe for a breakthrough as Timor Leste sat extremely deep and made it hard to create an opening.

Tori Tumeth managed to find a third in the 37th minute, and Australia went to the sheds three goals to the good.

Tumeth and Vine came off at half-time, replaced by Mary Fowler and Holly McNamara and it would prove a fruitful move in a big second half.

Amy Sayer scored in the 55th minute before Kyra Cooney-Cross added Australia’s fifth in the 59th minute.

Melindaj Barbieri came on in the 63rd minute, and Amy Sayer grabbed her second of the day in the 65th minute.

The last 20 minutes were the most fruitful minutes for the Young Matildas – goals in the 72nd, 79th, and 86th minutes pushed the scoreline way out to 9-0 and ensured a big win which reflected a dominant Australia performance.

“I am happy to see that in both our group matches so far our goals have been spread across the squad,” said Young Matildas coach Leah Blayney.

“For me it is a good sign, particularly as a youth national team, that we have several players [attackers and defenders] who can pose a threat in all moments of the game.”

The Westfield Young Matildas will now take on Cambodia in their third group match on Friday, with kick off at 7pm (AEST).
