Football West’s annual Smarter Than Smoking Africa Down Under Cup carnival takes place in Perth next week.
This will be the seventh edition of the event and will be hosted in partnership with Paydirt Media, to tie in with the three-day Africa Down Under mining conference in Perth.
Paydirt Editor Dominic Piper said the Cup was an opportunity to celebrate African culture.
“In 2012 Paydirt teamed up with Football West to create the Africa Down Under Cup,” he said.
“Paydirt had run the conference since 2003, welcoming guests from across the continent.
“We wanted to showcase to our visiting dignitaries the deep contribution the African diaspora makes to WA culture. And what better way to do it than through football, the most culturally diverse sport in Australia?
“The success of the event has seen it grow into a mainstay of the ADU program and it continues to achieve our goal of bringing African communities in Perth together with Australian companies who are investing in resources, infrastructure and skills development in their home countries.”
Football West CEO James Curtis said the carnival showed off the best of the sport in the state.
“The Africa Down Under Cup is a highlight of the Football West calendar,” he said.
“One of the biggest strengths of football in Western Australia is that it is inclusive and diverse. That is certainly a huge appeal of the Africa Down Under Cup, bringing together communities from across the city to celebrate our game.
“It is also a pleasure to continue our partnership with Paydirt Media, who have been with us with the Africa Down Under Cup since the start.”
The Smarter Than Smoking Africa Down Under Cup carnival again promises to be a major success, with 100 local players making up 10 teams, food trucks, entertainment and a Street Football presentation.
The 10 teams represented by local communities will be:
– North Lake Senior Campus
The event will be held at Langley Park on the Perth foreshore on Thursday, August 30 from 4.30pm to 7.30pm.
Teams will compete in small-sided football matches at the event, which provides an opportunity for conference delegates and members of the public to celebrate African cultures.
The Africa Down Under Cup is one of many Football West initiatives that support people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
