Bassendean win ensures survival

Report by Ryan Borrett

Bassendean Caledonian’s 2-1 win over the Stirling Panthers in the second leg of the Bankwest Women’s State League play-off on Sunday ensures they maintain their position in next season’s Bankwest Women’s Premier Division.

Bassendean Caledonian player-coach Kelly Jarden was pleased to have got over the line, as a late goal sealed the victory for the home side.

“It was very intense and very physical,” she said.

“We knew after last week we had to play better.

“We worked hard as a team and we were composed right to the finish.”

There were few chances for either side in the first half as both teams went into the break at 0-0 and it remained 1-1 on aggregate.

Bassendean had a great chance to go ahead in the 52nd minute as Casey Soffe was brought down in the box by Stirling’s Danielle Monastra, resulting in a penalty.

Jarden took responsibility from the spot and slotted home to the bottom right to make it 1-0.

Stirling equalised shortly after in the 69th minute as Bassendean failed to clear the ball from their defense.

The high ball was struck on the half-volley by Stirling’s Penelope Clayton and flew into the top left corner, leaving Sofija Vujovich no chance.

This levelled the tie on aggregate at 2-2, and neither side could find a breakthrough goal until the 90th minute.

A poor clearance by Stirling led to Bassendean’s Cassandra Stacey receiving the ball on the edge of Stirling’s box.

Stacey tried her luck from long range and her effort caught Stirling keeper Monique Todd off her line as the ball sailed over her head to give Bassendean the win.

Stirling Panthers coach Frank Dicosta was proud of his players despite their loss.

“I thought we really took it to them today,” he said.

“We conceded a penalty and a long range strike so that’s unfortunate.

“Both games were competitive and unfortunately we just fell short.”
