Belmont too strong for Subiaco

Defensive errors by Subiaco led to Belmont Villa taking a 3-1 win at Rosalie Park on Sunday in round 6 of the Amateur Premier Division.

Belmont captain James McDaid scored a brace to overcome a Subiaco side already weakened by injuries.

McDaid’s first goal came from a free kick near the edge of the box in the 34th minute, which rounded the Subiaco wall into the bottom right corner.

The free kick resulted from a professional foul by Subiaco defender Ian McCollum.

Subiaco drew level in the 54th minute when striker Sean Johnson got an outstretched boot onto a good cross from winger Kevin Punselie.

Punselie looked dangerous all game and provided an attacking spark down the right side with his pace.

However another mistake at the back for Subiaco proved costly after a clumsy challenge on Belmont midfielder James Fay resulted in a penalty for Belmont in the 77th minute.

McDaid stepped up to take the spot kick, and slotted it home into the left bottom corner to make it 2-1.

Subiaco kept up their fight in the second half and played well, but lacked quality in the final third.

Belmont midfielder Joseph Glynn added another goal in the 80th minute to make it 3-1, with the mistakes at the back for Subiaco continuing.

Belmont almost made it four in the 86th minute after Nasser Hussein’s lob was saved well by Thom Baker, who made another good follow up save on Barry’s driven attempt on the rebound.

Barry made a good impact off the bench for Villa and nearly scored in the 76th minute after his powerful strike hit the post.

Subiaco coach Les Cavill said he’s been happier in previous games.

“We played well enough but the mistakes cost us today,” he said.

“The injuries are no excuse, we had 11 players out there.”

Belmont Villa defender Sean Carroll played a great game at centre back, stopping several Subiaco chances with excellent tackling in a very solid performance.

Belmont were 5th in the league standings before the game and will now overtake previously 4th placed Subiaco.
