The book, Bernd Stange: The Coach Who Knew Too Much, written by Perth author Thomas Mackay, is on sale now at the Football West offices in Perth.
Mackay spent more than two years piecing together the 162-page history, with the book launched late in 2016 by key Glory personnel – both past and present – Member for South Perth John McGrath, and Football West staff, including Chief Executive Officer James Curtis.
In 2003, Stange received one of the rarest honours in world sport – the FIFA Presidential Award – for his part in resurrecting football in Iraq after the United States-led assault that left that country’s national team destitute. While in Iraq, Stange narrowly escaped assassination by terrorists.
The former East German national team coach brought charisma and character to his role with Glory in 1998 as the club was transformed into one of the most important sporting properties in WA.
The book, which retails for $20, is available at Unit 94, 262 Lord St, Perth (open 9am-5pm).
