Birighitti joins WA Socceroos in World Cup Qualifier

Football West News

The inclusion of goalkeeper Mark Birighitti in the Socceroos squad for Tuesday’s crunch match against Syria brings to four the number of Western Australian players hoping to play their part in Australia’s final FIFA World Cup Asian qualifier.

Former Perth SC and Newcastle Jets custodian Birighitti joins fellow WA players Josh Risdon (Western Sydney Wanderers), Trent Sainsbury (Jiangsu Suning, China) and Nikita Rukavytsya (Maccabi Haifa, Israel) in Ange Postecoglou’s squad.

Birighitti, who plays for Dutch club NAC Breda, has replaced the injured Danny Vukovic, who has returned to his Belgian club KRC Genk.

The Caltex Socceroos will arrive home in Australia today ahead of their 2018 FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifiers – Asian Play-off second-leg match against Syria in Sydney.

On Thursday evening in Melaka, Malaysia, the Socceroos made a solid start to their play-off campaign against Syria, drawing 1-1 at the Hang Jebat Stadium.

Caltex Socceroos and Syria all square after first leg in Melaka.

Robbie Kruse opened the scoring for Australia in the first half before Omar Al Soma equalised for Syria from the penalty spot in the second stanza.

A win against Syria next Tuesday night at Stadium Australia in Sydney will propel Australia to the CONCACAF-Asian Zone Play-off (home and away) in November 2017 for a place at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
