Beckenham Angels moved clear of the bottom of the Bankwest Women’s State Premier League table after a come-from-behind 2-1 win against Bassendean Caledonians on Sunday afternoon.
Casey Soffe had given Bassendean the lead on the half hour, but goals midway through the second half by Beckenham striker Tiana Botha sealed their first win of the season, and left Caledonians strandard at the bottom of the table.
Botha said it was a strong team performance and they were happy to get their first win.
“We’ve been fighting really hard against every team, but results haven’t gone our way,” she said.
“Little mistakes have cost us and we knew today was a big opportunity to get a win, so we’re really happy to get it.
“It was nice to score the two goals today and it helped me late when we put a couple of more players up front, but I thought our defence was good today to hold them off.”
Beckenham coach Greg Farrell said his new look side fought the game out well and was happy to get the win.
“Our first win of the campaign is good and I was happy the way the defence played today,” he said.
“We have new core of players this season, so I’m really happy for them to celebrate a win.
“Some games don’t go the way you want them to, and we’ve played much better than today and been beaten by the top teams.
“We are still a work in progress, but the more we play together, the better we will get, they have got the ability.”
Only one point separated the teams at kick off and both sides had early chances.
On five minutes, Stacey Cavill saved Epril Nossent’s long-range shot, before Loren Baker cleared Botha’s header off the line.
But on the half hour mark the visitors stunned their hosts with the opener, as Ashley Byrne fed Soffe, who raced clear and finished low past Cavill.
The hosts were struggling to break down a Bassendean defence well marshalled by Tahti Salla and it was the visitors who went into the break with the lead.
Beckenham lifted after half time as Sam Geddes saved Laura St Ruth’s early shot, but still they struggled to make the breakthrough.
That all changed on 77 minutes, when Jessica Valenti’s cross was turned home by Botha for the equaliser, much to the relief of the home faithful.
They didn’t have long to wait for the next goal and the same two players were involved once again.
Valenti’s corner wasn’t dealt with by the Bassendean defence and in the goalmouth scramble Botha fired home from close-range.
Bassendean pushed players forward looking for the equaliser and Cavill had to be alert to save Heather Bishop’s shot on the run, before Byrne’s shot drifted wide of the target.
The visitors had one last chance to take something from the game, when Kelly Jarden’s corner picked out Chloe Barnes, but her header flew over the top.
