Sorrento striker Sean Canham’s early headed goal was enough to push his team past a resilient Dianella White Eagles side and into the State Cup final for the second time in three years.
The result also qualified Sorrento for the FFA Cup round of 32, just two years after their historic first appearance against A-League side Sydney FC.
The match at Percy Doyle Reserve started at a lightning pace with neither side allowing their opponent to have much time or space on the ball.
The high intensity appeared to favour the home side as Ryan Pearson found space down the left and delivered a mouthwatering ball for target man Sean Canham who made no mistake, drilling a header past Farsalas from six yards out.
The goal appeared to kick Dianella into gear as they began to work themselves into the game with Francis Waniru causing some serious problems for the Sorrento defence.
It was Waniru who almost brought Dianella level as his drilled cross from the left was deflected on target by Mcdonald and was only kept out by a fingertip save from Sorrento keeper Connor Campbell.
Dianella continued to gain momentum as the match went on and came inches away from drawing level when Ibrahim Hamad’s long range effort crashed into the side netting.
Despite their dominance, Dianella couldn’t make the most of their chances and Sorrento went into the break with a slender 1-0 lead.
The second half started in similar fashion to the first, with both sides looking to play a high tempo game.
Dianella were given a great chance to draw level just before the hour mark when Hamad was brought down just outside the area after making a blistering run towards goal. A free kick by Sotiris Theodosiades was comfortably saved by Sorrento custodian Campbell.
Sorrento came close to doubling their lead and killing the game off when centre half Steve Mcdonald drifted forward and got on the end of a cross, forcing a fantastic save out of goalkeeper Nas Farsalas.
Dianella continued to push forward in the dying stages of the match searching for an equaliser and came close when a set-piece led to a crazy goal mouth scramble which Sorrento just managed to keep out.
That late goalmouth clearance proved vital for Sorrento as they managed to hold on for a courageous 1-0 victory and secure another cup final berth.
Sorrento will now face Western Knights in the final in a bid to win their second cup final in three years after defeating Perth SC in the 2015 final.
