UPDATE Jan 26: Football West Development Officer Elmi Ali received an award from the City of Canning on Saturday in recognition of his volunteer work.
Ali has been named Young Community Citizen of the Year for helping set up a number of programs for local residents. He collected his medal and certificate as part of the Australia Day celebrations.
The programs Ali has been involved include:
diverse female swimming at Cannington Leisureplex
Queens Park Soccer Club youth co-ordinator, getting disadvantaged youngsters to play football
youth advisor on the City’s community advisory group
working with non-profit organisations focusing on bushlands and protected species
working with charity groups to raise awareness of domestic violence and its consequences
Ali said: “It’s really motivating – I certainly don’t do it to earn awards but it is satisfying that local government recognises the work you do.
“It will hopefully encourage other young people as they can be confident that they will be seen too.
“But the most important thing is that local councils engage in the community and the City of Canning is leading the way.”
Ali, who received the City of Canning 2018 Local Heroes Individual Award last September, is involved in many programs through his role as an Inclusive Development Officer at Football West such as Street Football, Common Goal and working at local schools.
