Classy Hamersley too good for North Perth

Report by Max Hayden-Evans

Hamersley Rovers opened their 2018 Belt Up Amateur Premier League campaign with a win away to North Perth United at Woodville Reserve on Sunday afternoon.

The visitors scored twice quickly before the break, before adding another early in the second half to see off North Perth.

Hamersley’s bright start to the season was only marred by a horror injury to John Mcelwee who was rushed to hospital after a clash with the goal post early in the match.

The freak injury occurred after Mcelwee had bravely slid in to clear the ball off the line after United’s Dan Conway had rounded the keeper and rolled a shot towards the open goal.

Following a lengthy delay, the first-half action resumed as North Perth almost snatched the lead following a number of attempts to break down a resilient Hamersley defence.

Hamersley’s resilience was rewarded with a pair of quick strikes late in the first-half that stunned North Perth heading into the break.

Dave Morris scored the first, latching on to a clever through ball to finish calmly past United goalkeeper Jamie Serra.

Moments later, Hamersley capitalised on Serra’s failure to punch the ball clear as powered the ball home from close range.

In the second half, Dave Morris’ tireless efforts up-front were again rewarded as he curled the ball into the back of the North Perth net from inside the box.

North Perth pulled a goal back courtesy of Sean Lahert’s headed effort – however, it would be too little too late for the home side.

United coach Alex Carter was seen to be frustrated throughout the game and blamed a lack of communication for his side’s disappointing performance.
