Clinical Ashfield stun Forrestfield

Ashfield got their All Flags State League Division One season off to a winning start with a 4-0 win over Forrestfield in a tough match at Ashfield Arena on Saturday.

An early goal from James Stewart put the home side ahead early, and Forrestfield couldn’t find a way back into the game despite dominating the chances.

After an early shot took a deflection out for a corner, Ashfield managed to take the lead in only the second minute, with Stewart’s backheel finding the back of the net.

Despite going behind early, it would be Forrestfield with the majority of the chances in the half.

Jordan Hart was at the center of the action, putting a ball across the face of the goal that was missed by both teams, followed by his shot a minute later forcing a fantastic save from Scott Rowe.

Hart would have another two huge chances in the next two minutes, blazing over the bar from meters out, and putting the ball wide in a one on one opportunity after a great first touch.

As half time approached, Ashfield found their second shot at goal, with Jay Lang losing his man and getting one on one with Luke Martino. The Forrestfield goalie however, would not let his side go into the half two down, putting off a fantastic last ditch save to keep the score at 1-0.

In the second half, Martino again kept the scores as they were with a fingertip save onto the bar, but Ashfield would not be denied their second goal.

Gary Hill managed to to be the first to the rebound, and put his side two goals up with 20 minutes to play.

Ashfield then put the game beyond doubt, with a quick fire double from two of their substitutes giving them an unassailable lead. Daniel Corbett managed to get on the end of a long free kick to tap in, whilst Cameron Sutton placed the ball into the bottom corner after a neat piece of play in the 84th.

Ashfield coach Matt Wardle was ecstatic with his sides performance.

“We worked very hard in training, we nullified them, took our chances and I’m proud as punch of the boys,” he said.

“We came down here with the right attitude and got the win.”

Forrestfield coach Rod Banjac was rightly disappointed with his team.

“It was disappointing, we had our moments but we conceded a poor early result,” he said.

“We will learn from this performance, but we aren’t the underdogs anymore. We’re expected to win like this and I’m unsure if our boys can handle that pressure.”
