Community Courses

Football West facilitates the training of community coaches at various locations and times during the year.

Courses that run according to a Football West timetable are displayed below. These courses are updated when necessary, so please return to this page if there are no current courses suitable to your needs.

Additionally, clubs can contact Football West to request a coaching course to be conducted at their chosen venue. These courses will run according to demand.

In order to be eligible to take part in a Football West coaching course, attendees must register using the online system and make immediate payment by credit card.

Registrations received without payment will not be processed.

Football West offers Grassroots Certificate, Skills Training Certificate, Game Training Certificate and Senior Performance Phase Certificate courses.

Female Coaches Mentor Program

The Female Coaches Mentor Program is a new Football West initiative that will match inexperienced female coaches with experienced female mentors. The experienced mentors will offer their inexperienced mentees guidance and support as they develop their skills and confidence as football coaches.

The program aims to address the lack of qualified female coaches in Western Australia by encouraging more female football players to qualify as coaches and incentivising those already qualified to remain in the role.

The program involves a one-day mentor training program on 29 April 2017 at Gibney Reserve, Maylands. It will initially involve 10 mentors, with a view to eventually linking mentors and mentees within their own clubs.

Nominations can be made via the Football West website. Nominations close 18 March 2017.

ALDI MiniRoos Certificate (Formerly Grassroots Certificate)

The ALDI Miniroos Certificate, which uses short, game-based sessions to introduce football to newcomers in an inclusive way, kicked off on February 18.

The 3 hour course, designed for kids aged four to nine years, is fully practical and encourages the coach to develop practices that are safe, fun an enjoyable.

The nation-wide program puts an emphasis on natural development, being active, making life-long friends and potentially unearthing the next generation of Socceroos or Matildas.

No coaching but organising FUN football exercises is the key to helping players build a love for the game.

Another highlight of the course is that the coaches are exposed to basic rules of the game as well as tips and hints on building a football culture in a completely practical setting.

The Certificate, previously known as the Football West Grassroots Course, was recently renamed to fall in line with new Football Federation Australia sponsorships.

The course is conducted over 14 hours, is fully practical and deals with the development of the four functional game skills, being first touch, striking the ball, running with the ball and one-versus-one.

These four core skills make up 95 percent of the actions of outfield players during a game. It is critical to train these actions repeatedly so that players develop the ability to perform them more effectively during a game.
