State Cup holders Western Knights and Forrestfield United drew 1-1 in the All Flags State League Division One top of the table clash on Saturday.
Mark Barnett’s goal for Forrestfield early in the second half cancelled out Paul Lloyd’s opener, as the Knights remain three points clear of their rivals ahead of a Westfield FFA Cup tie away at Gold Coast City on Wednesday.
Knights coach Trim Morgan said it was important for his team to concentrate, despite the team’s busy schedule.
‘I’ve kept their feet on the ground,” he said.
“We’ve had to focus on three big games and be ready for each one mentally and physically.”
“Brilliant victory last week in the State Cup final, but if we want to win the league we have to focus.”
Forrestfield imposed themselves physically from the start as they looked to end the Knights’ unbeaten home record.
Mitchell Crocker was dangerous for United with several set pieces leading to some near misses and good goalkeeping from Western Knights custodian Sam Stone.
The Knights improved as the half wore on, though, and took the lead when Brian Patterson was fouled and Lloyd curled a brilliant free kick into the bottom corner from just outside the box.
Forrestfield were unlucky to go into the break behind, but hit back on 49 minutes when Barnett hit back with a free-kick of his own as he drilled low into the net.
A wrestle ensued but neither side could find a winner in the wet conditions, despite the Knights being reduced to 10 men when David Murphy collected a second yellow card.
Ben Rogers wasted Forrestfield’s best chance when he broke from midfield but blazed over the bar.
Forrestfield Assistant Coach Terry Brown was satisfied with the point.
“I thought it was a fairly even game, which could have gone either way,” he said.
“You don’t win the cup if you’re no good. They’re a quality side.”
