Dianella triumph in six-goal thriller

Report by Matthew Corvi

Dianella White Eagles continued their unbeaten start to the All Flags State League Division One season with a thrilling 4-2 win over Forrestfield United.

Despite going 2-0 down in the first 15 minutes, the league leaders hit back with four unanswered goals to shock Forrestfield and take the three points.

Dianella coach Robbie Dunn was ecstatic with his team’s comeback.

“It was an unbelievable performance to come back from two goals down against a very good side and win convincingly,” he said.

“The first 20 minutes was an over hang from the cup game. We’ve played more games than the other sides in the league, but our players didn’t give up.”

Forrestfield started brightly and took the lead in the fifth minute.

Rhys Loxley beat his man, whipped a ball across goal and Hasani Sinclair scored with a neat finish at the back post.

They doubled their lead 10 minutes later as Liam Merigan found space, turned his man and fired his shot into the bottom corner.

Dianella was then gifted a goal after an error from Forrestfield goalkeeper Luke Martino, who allowed Safris Theodosiades to tap the ball into the back of the net.

The home side started the second half quickly and got an equaliser eight minutes after the break.

Francis Wanjiru found space at the back post to power his shot past Martino after a quickly taken free-kick.

Forrestfield tried to hold off Dianella’s pressure, but their resistance was broken by a great piece of skill from Angel Andres.

The former Cockburn forward controlled a long ball over the defence with his chest and placed the ball neatly into the corner.

Andres continued his fine form in front of goal with his second and Dianella’s fourth just two minutes later after capitalising on a defensive mistake and tucked the ball into the bottom corner.

Forrestfield coach Rod Banjac was disappointed with the result, but happy with the performance against the league leaders.

“There’s no doubt Dianella is by far the best side in the league and they are capable of punishing any side in WA,” he said.

“We had a great start and had multiple chances to put the game away with a third goal but the best team won on the day.

“The match was definitely a spectacle for the sport and a fantastic advertisement for the competition.”
