Eagles fly high with upset win over Cockburn

Report by Peter Simcox

Dianella White Eagles striker Angel Andres has scored a hat-trick against his former team Cockburn City to take his side into round 7 of the Westfield FFA Cup.

The All Flags State League Division One side defeated the PS4 NPLWA side at Dalmatinac Park on Saturday 3-0.

Andres left Cockburn during the Summer and said the round 6 match was a great all-round team performance from his Dianella team mates.

“It was a good win for the team, yes I scored the goals, but we made the win together, and who’s next?” the Spanish striker said.

“It’s a great day for the club and we are in a good position on the table, but today we will celebrate and whoever we play next, we are ready for them.”

He said it was special to score a hat-trick, especially against his former club.

“I left Cockburn not for football reasons but my own reasons, but today I play for Dianella and I’m really happy to help them into the next round.”

Dianella coach Robbie Dunn said he was proud of his players after another fantastic performance.

“We had a plan in the first half to get at them, and we managed to score a couple, and the plan in the second was to hold on to our lead and hit them on the counter attack, and it worked,” he said.

“It was a great all-round team performance today.

“Mwansa (Musonda) was really good and Angel does what he does and put the ball in the net, another great performance from him today.”

Dunn also praised skipper Bojan Radinovic, who was doubtful for the game before kick off.

“These boys amaze me at times, Bojan shouldn’t have played, but he put his hand up and said he was right to go and I couldn’t more proud of them,” he said.

“They pressed us second half but the lads put their bodies on the line and we managed to hold out and deservedly won the game.”

The script had been written pre-game for Andres and the Spanish striker didn’t disappoint, heading home a Jason Stepanovski corner after only seven minutes.

Andres was at it again eight minutes later. A long ball found him mid-way in the Cockburn half, where he held of his marker, rounded the keeper and rolled the ball home, much to the delight of the travelling supporters.

Cockburn struggled to get past a Dianella defence well marshalled by skipper Bojan Radinovic, while Cockburn keeper Luke Radonich had to be alert to tip over Yann Castric’s cross shot on the half hour.

It was more of the same after half time, with Stepanovski’s free kick punched clear by Radonich, and Mwansa Musonda firing the rebound just wide of the upright.

Musonda was causing the Cockburn defence all sorts of problems down the left, and he raced clear moments later and crossed to Stepanovski, who blazed over from 10 meters.

The home side came to life, and started to create chances. Second half substitute Harry O’Brien headed straight at keeper Nas Farasalas, before the Dianella custodian got down well to save Gian Albano’s shot on the run.

Cockburn were almost given a helping hand back in the game on 78 minutes. Cameron Edwards’ corner was misjudged by Farasalas, but at the last minute the big keeper stuck out a hand and pushed the ball onto the crossbar and it was cleared.

Dianella were soaking up the Cockburn pressure, and in the final minute they hit on a swift counter attack to seal the game.

Francis Wanjiru raced down the right before picking out Andres, who eased past two defenders before finishing with aplomb past Radonich, and put them in the hat for the next round.
