Five-star Redbacks ease past Caledonian

Report by Anthony Ballis

The Northern Redbacks eased to a 5-0 victory against Bassendean Caledonian at Celebration Park on Sunday in the Bankwest Women’s State League.

The Redbacks were in control from the first whistle and secured an impressive win with three goals coming from winger Larissa Walsh and a brace from striker Renee Leota.

Through skilful midfielder Megan Miller the Redbacks were able to control possession for most of the match and earned a deserved lead after 24 minutes when Leota capitalised on a failed clearance by the Caledonians to put the home team in front.

Winger Larissa Walsh doubled their lead in the 34th minute after passing three defenders before slotting the ball past Caledonian keeper Samantha Geddes.

In the second half the Redbacks continued their quality when the on-fire Walsh bagged her second after an excellent run down the right wing in the 64th minute, before a calm finish between the legs of the Caledonian keeper.

Bassendean worked hard to get back into the game, and started to get on top in the midfield through the hard-working Casey Soffe and midfield enforcer Lindsay Roe, but never tested Redbacks goalkeeper Kathleen Waycott.

In the 80th minute a swift counter-attack by the Redbacks gifted Walsh a well-deserved hat-trick.

Leota completed the scoring one minute later to add a fifth to a dominant Redbacks score-line.

Hat-trick hero Walsh said she was delighted her role in the win and commended the service from her team mates.

“It helps to have a good team, they know that I like through-balls and I can run onto them.

“Three goals, quite happy with that”, she said.
