UPDATE: Football West is delighted to announce that an Indonesian football team will undertake an eight-day tour of Western Australia, commencing this week.
This will be the first leg of a two-way exchange with the Football West Gold Fields State Team travelling to Indonesia in 2019.
The Persebaya Under-19 side will arrive in Perth for the football exchange program on Thursday, June 28 and stay until Wednesday, July 4.
During their visit the Persebaya side are scheduled to play three matches against WA teams.
Football West will host the visit, which is a result of months of co-operation between Football West and the WA State Government.
The tour is set to be the first of many undertaken by teams from Asia, where football is by far the most popular sport. This is also the latest development in Football West’s Asian Engagement Strategy designed to strengthen ties between WA football and Asia.
Football West CEO James Curtis says the tour will be a celebration of sport, tourism and culture.
“With so many Indonesian football participants in WA, we are looking forward to the first step in a prosperous football and cultural partnership with Indonesia.
“This exchange with Persebaya is important to players from both countries and it supports Football West’s efforts in improving player, referee and coaching pathways.”
WA Government Minister for Asian Engagement Bill Johnston has been a key figure in bringing the Indonesian team to WA.
“I’m very pleased the Persebaya football team are coming to Perth to play against our local teams and build our sporting connections with our Asian neighbours,” Mr Johnston said.
“East Java has been a Sister State to WA for almost 30 years, so it’s important we continue to strengthen our ties with the Indonesian province.”
Football West would also like to recognise the work done by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade WA office in making the tour possible.
As well as the three matches, the Indonesian squad will visit the WA Institute of Sport. The tour will also offer opportunity to promote Western Australia, with time set aside for the Indonesian party to visit a number of tourist attractions including Rottnest Island.
