Football West welcomes new Life Member

Football West News

Football West admitted its newest Life Member on Tuesday night when Janette Spencer joined the prestigious group.

Football West Chairman Liam Twigger presented Janette with her certificate and Life Member pin.

The former Football West Board Member is a popular and widely respected figure throughout Australian football and this was named on the recently-formed FFA Women’s Football Council.

This most recent accolade is one of many she has received in more than 30 years in football, a sport she took up at the relatively late age of 24.

She helped establish the first women’s football team at the WA Institute of Technology (now Curtin University). That was the start of a long, voluntary commitment to the game, from club secretary in 1987 to serving on the Football West Board until 2017.

Janette was instrumental in establishing the first “girls only” junior competition in 1996, the under 12s, and she also served twice as president of Women’s Soccer WA.

Janette was also a driving force behind the establishment of Football West in 2004, working hard at building a successful strategic, governance and financial management success of Women’s Soccer WA over the years.

In the lead up to the amalgamation, WSWA brought a considerable financial contribution to the table as they established of the Women’s Soccer Development Trust.

As well as serving two terms as a Football West elected director, Janette has served in many roles across different levels, from national committee through to club level, including:

  • Chair of the Interim Women’s Standing Committee, Soccer Australia

  • Director of Development, Australian Women’s Soccer Association

  • Director, Soccer Administration of WA, a predecessor of Football West

  • Chair of Women’s Standing Committee, Football West

  • President, Women’s Soccer Association of WA – 2 terms

  • Secretary, Women’s Soccer Association of WA

  • WA Soccer Association Interim Advisory Committee

Janette has also been honoured with a number of awards for her service to football including:

  • Inductee, Football Hall of Fame Western Australia – Service to Football

  • Australian Sports Medal (Federal Government) – Service to sport

  • AOC recognition as Women’s Sport Leader

  • Life Membership Subiaco Women’s Soccer Club

  • Half Blues Award – Curtin University (sport administration)

  • Life Membership Women’s Soccer WA

  • Finalist, May Campbell Award, WA Sport Federation

Janette has contributed strongly as a player over the years, from State Representation in 1987 to multiple successes as a member of teams competing in Masters Games from 1994.

As possibly the oldest currently registered member of Football West and still playing in the Women’s Open competition, Janette plans to continue playing until the 2021 World Masters Games in Japan.
