Forrestfield in for the skill …

Football West News

Forrestfield United are the latest club to begin their club Skill Acquisition Program.

The program ensures young players get the opportunity to maintain and improve their skill levels out of season and will be a compulsory requirement for all Junior NPL clubs from 2019.

Forrestfield Technical Director for junior players Vlad Korlat said the youngsters had embraced the 10-week program.

“We have four groups of academy and development squad players aged 9-12 and each of the groups has 13 players,” Korlat said. “It’s aimed for players who are in the more competitive leagues.

“It’s been a really good experience and the kids have loved it so far.

“We rotate the groups so the coaches work with the kids we don’t normally coach.

“All of the coaches involved are doing it voluntarily and it’s helping keep the cost of the program down for the youngsters.”

Football West Skills Acquisition Trainer Brad Hassell has developed many of the session plans, which are in conjunction with the FFA program.

“It’s great to see that Forrestfield have kicked off their club SAP program as it gives their 9-12 year old players an opportunity to continue their football development during the off-season,” Hassell said.

“One of the reasons we are implementing club-based SAP programs is to achieve the long-term aim of ‘year-round football’. This will be crucial in improving the overall standard of players across the state.”
