Forrestfield and Phoenix share the spoils

Report by Blayne Treadgold

South West Phoenix held off a spirited late surge from Forrestfield United to share the points after a 2-2 draw in their All Flags State League Division One match at Hartfield Park on Saturday.

A brace from Forrestfield striker Hasani Sinclair saw United twice come from a goal down and throw everything at the Phoenix defence as they chased a late winner.

Phoenix goalkeeper Adam Guthridge made a miraculous double save in the dying minutes as the game ended all square.

Forrestfield captain Liam Merrigan was pleased with his side’s performance and commended the Phoenix gloveman on his late heroics.

“It was a good contest,” he said.

“I’m pleased that we could break down their defence despite them parking the bus.

“I thought we had scored but somehow their keeper pulled off that unbelievable save.”

Merigan also paid credit to his club following a tough couple of weeks off the field.

“The news hit the club very hard,” he said.

“It shows the character of the club for everyone to come out and pay tribute like they did.”

South West opened the scoring through Corey Barclay when he tapped home after a ball from a wide position.

Sinclair equalised on 39 minutes with a terrific header, but the hosts didn’t stay level for long.

Michael Farmer put Phoenix ahead for a second time on the stroke of half time when he beat Forrestfield goalkeeper Luke Martino to courageously head home.

Sinclair scored his second from the penalty spot in the 72nd minute when Julian Serra spotted a foul in the area and the forward converted.

United had multiple chances to win it late with the best moments falling to Sinclair and Merigan, but Phoenix managed to hold on and get a share of the points.

Phoenix Coach Mauro Marchione was pleased with his side sticking to the game plan, despite having a number of players missing.

“We played to our plan very well on the counter and we surprised them early,” he said.

“It wasn’t easy, but I think we matched them in every department.”
