Gold Fields U15s win Bali warm-up

Football West News

The Gold Fields State Under 15 Boys Team have begun their 10-day tour of Bali with a come-from-behind win against strong local side Paradise Football Academy.

After arriving in Indonesia at 10pm on Saturday, it was straight to work for the WA youngsters who kicked off their preparation match for the upcoming Bali International Football Championships at 8am on Sunday.

The early start, coupled with the 28C heat and humidity, no doubt contributed to the slow start as the hosts took a quick lead and keeper Sam Reilly was forced to make a couple of good saves.

However, the West Australian boys began to settle and got on terms before the break thanks to a quality free-kick from midfielder Hamish Van Dieken after he had been brought down following a fine dribble out from his own half.

And a competitive encounter was decided late in the second half when Daniel Faichney scored the winner for the visitors after Van Dieken’s effort had been saved.

Coach Brad Hassell praised the way his team rose to the challenge of the testing conditions and falling behind.

“As the game went on we got stronger, which was the biggest positive, rather than the game dying … we kept a good level throughout the whole game,” he said.

After the match and back at the hotel where most of the 12 teams are staying, the draw took place for the tournament which commences on Monday.

The WA side begin against Malaysian opposition at 8pm on Monday, followed by a South Korean outfit at 8pm on Tuesday.

The players then went to the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park and restaurant for the opening ceremony, with skipper Faichney capping a memorable day by carrying the Australia flag.

The Bali International Football Championships comprises of sides from WA, Indonesia (3), China, Malaysia, South Korea (2), Philippines, Japan, Thailand and Singapore.

The Championships have been organised by the GOBOLABALI Foundation to develop youth football in Indonesia.
