Good start for State team in China

The Gold Fields Under 15 State Team began their trip to China with a 3-0 friendly win over Shenxin Under 15s on Tuesday.

Goals from Bayswater City’s Carl Dias, Daniel Faichney of Sorrento and Samuel Cook (Murdoch University Melville) gave the WA team victory as they prepare for their first match of the Jinshan International Youth Football Championship against the India National Youth Team on Saturday.

Head coach Garry Church said the players did well to win in difficult conditions.

He said: “On the first day the players had a light training session for 45 minutes to allow them to stretch their legs and get a feel for the weather. It is warm with a breeze which makes a massive difference but the humidity is a big factor.

“The match against Shenxin was a real test for the players as they had to play at match intensity in the heat and humidity. But we started off well and Shenxin found it hard to break the boys down.

“We got our first goal through Carl Dias’s counter attack. He used his pace to beat two defenders and slot the ball into the bottom corner.

“The second goal came through a short corner by Freeman Nyatsambo and Carl Dias. Dias took on two players and cut the ball back to Daniel Faichney on the edge of the box and he took a touch past a defender and fired home number two.

“The third came from a quick free-kick on the edge of the box by Lukas Debnam, playing the ball through the defence for Sammy Cook to run onto and coolly slot it past the keeper.

“It was a good start to the build-up to the tournament, allowing the players to acclimatise and adjust to the conditions. We have one more friendly and this will help the team adjust further, especially as some players struggled with the heat.”

After facing India, the Gold Fields WA Team will play against China on August 26 and Czech outfit Slavia Prague on August 28.
