Football clubs across WA are reaping the benefits of becoming more healthy – on and off the pitch.
Football West has teamed up with the State Government’s Healthway foundation to encourage clubs to offer healthier options to players and in their match-day canteens.
The Kicking Off Healthy Clubs program rewards three winners each month with a $750 equipment pack for their club.
Cockburn City, Westside FC and Denmark were the initial winners of the $750 Evolution Sports packs. This month Rockingham City, Westnam United and Wanneroo City have been selected.
Westside FC President Steve Farley said the voucher would be a great help to the Kinross club.
“It will really help us replenish our stock for next season, a lot will go on match balls,” he said.
“But I would encourage all clubs to get involved, regardless of whether you win a prize or not.
“We were lucky enough to be chosen but we all want to set the right example to our kids and to get them to eat the right stuff.
“We make sure there is plenty of water and fruit available for our players and we also reflect this in our canteen menu, which has healthy alternatives to sit with the standard food on offer.”
Healthway Senior Sponsorship Officer Kelle Maren said: “‘The Kicking Off Healthy Clubs initiative aims to encourage Football West affiliated clubs and teams to identify healthy behaviours that help them to participate in sport they love.
“By creating a healthier environment within your club, you are not only supporting your athletes to become healthier people, but to become better footballers.
“Whether your club is a winner in the initiative or not, we hope that you can join Healthway and continue to change your club for the better to create a healthier Western Australia.”
