Kingsley SC staged a last minute comeback to defeat Subiaco SC 2-1 in round 16 of the Amateur Premier League at Rosalie Park on Sunday.
Sean Johnson put Subiaco in the lead early in the second by finding his way through a crowded goal square in the 48th minute, before a cross from the corner gave Aaron Lickiss his chance to get Kingsley on the board in the 80th minute.
It was soon followed by Joe Joyce, who got a shot past the keeper in the 87th minute, securing victory for Kingsley in the dying minutes of the match.
Kingsley coach Steven Dimitrovich said his team played with more character in this match than any other.
“We had to chase it knowing Wembley was ahead so we went after it and credit to the boys today,” he said.
Sunday’s win puts Kingsley within two points of the top spot on the ladder, held by Wembley Downs.
“It keeps the pressure on Wembley and keeps some pressure on ourselves,” he said
“Who knows what can happen from here on in if we just keep winning and doing our job.”
The result was an unlikely turnaround in a second half controlled by Subiaco.
The home side had their chances, with Kevin Punselie shooting over the bar and Paddy Beeley hitting the post in the 25th 74th minutes.
Subiaco coach Les Cavill said it was an unfortunate loss.
“Kingsley had their chances in the first half, but in the second half we came out there to get the win,” he said.
“It is hard to take but that’s football.
“They took their chances and for some reason we couldn’t take ours.”
Both sides were yet to score during the first half which was dominated by Kingsley.
But Kingsley failed to capitalise on opportunities including Nick Lowe’s close shot in the 11th minute or Jayden Drummond’s convincing run at goal in the 40th.
Dimitrovich said Kingsley had its eye on the top of the ladder and would be ready for next week’s match against Perth Royals FC in round 17.
