Knights claim All Flags State League title

Report by Matthew Corvi

Western Knights claimed the All Flags State League Division One title after a 3-1 victory over Gosnells City at Nash Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Knights went into the game knowing a win would all but confirm first place on the ladder, and made sure they claimed all three points with a dominant performance.

Coach Trim Morgan was thrilled to have won the title.

“Ecstatic we’ve won the league, a sensational season from the lads,” he said.

“We panicked a bit early in the game but settled down in the second half and saw out the game.”

“I’d like to thank all the players who’ve worked their socks off this season to win the league, all the committee members and our President who have put in so much work behind the scenes. We wouldn’t be in this spot without them.”

Gosnells missed early chances to go ahead but despite their dominance, the Knights also couldn’t find a way ahead in the first half, and the sides went into the break even.

It took the Knights only five minutes into the second half to break the Gosnells defense, with Jack Rycroft scoring a looping header from close range over Adriano D’Alo.

Rycroft and the Knights had their second goal just two minutes later after D’Alo rushed off his goal line to clear a long ball with his head.

His clearance fell directly to Rycroft, who lobbed the ball over D’Alo’s head from distance to give his side their second goal.

Gosnells would not go down without a fight and managed to pull a goal back in the 70th minute.

After a quick counter attack, Wade Farmer controlled the ball extremely well on the edge of the box and placed a shot in the bottom corner giving Sam Stone no chance.

With the game becoming a tight affair in the remaining minutes, Gosnells defender Salvador Chavez was sent off and the Knights were awarded a penalty.

Paul Lloyd made no mistake with the penalty, ensuring the Knights would claim all three points.

Shortly after full time, news filtered in that Forrestfield had drawn 3-3 against Fremantle, meaning the Western Knights had won the State Division League One title with one game remaining.

Gosnells City coach Alan Dunlop was pleased with his side’s performance and credited the hosts for their dominant season.

“We’ve had a bad run lately and we gave the crowd something to cheer about with a strong performance,” he said.

“Congratulations to Western Knights, the table doesn’t lie and they have a great side. They deserved the title this season.”
