Knights end season with a five-star performance

Report by Peter Simcox

Western Knights celebrated their All Flags State League Division One title in style with a stunning 5-0 win against Rockingham City in the final game of the season at Nash Field.

The damage was done in the first half by Adriano Jelenović, Paul Lloyd and a brace from defender Greg Pellow, which completed a dominate performance of attacking football.

Knights’ coach Trim Morgan said it was a fitting end to a great season from his players.

“I said to the boys before the game they had to go out and deliver a good performance in our last game and they have done that today, and continued our unbeaten home record.” he said.

“Our defence has been outstanding all season, only conceding 16 goals in the league, and it was good on the final day to also finish with a clean sheet.

“It’s not happened overnight, the boys have trained hard since November, and we’ve had big numbers at training throughout the season, so as a coach it’s been great and it’s been a fantastic season for the club”.

Captain Paul Lloyd said after a great season the league title was what they wanted and he was delighted to lead them to it.

“We talked before the season we wanted to win the league, and we’ve achieved that, but we spoke before the game that we wanted to end on a high, and we have, I’m delighted to lead this side to the title,” he said.

The Knights had already clinched the title last week at home against Gosnells City, but on the day they were to be handed the trophy, they made a great start and were ahead on 10 minutes.

A poor back pass put keeper Phil Herschell under pressure and his attempted clearance was charged down by Josh Cortes, the keeper did well to save Cortes’ shot, but Jelenovic was on hand to fire home the rebound.

Just 10 minutes later the Knights added a second, Cortes was brought down by Josh Metzinger and referee Simon Hicks pointed straight to the penalty spot.  Lloyd stepped and hit the back of the net to double his sides advantage.

It was 3-0 a couple of minutes later, Pellow losing his marker in the six-yard box to head home powerfully from Lloyd’s corner.

It was one-way traffic as the Knights pressed, Herschell produced a great double save to deny Jelenović, but there was nothing the Rockingham custodian could do when the Knights added a fourth on 42 minutes.

It was Pellow again who found space again at the back post to head home David Murphy’s corner.

It was more of the same in the second half as Western Knights added their fifth.

Jelenović broke free from his marker who pounced on a rebound from his own shot to slot the ball home calmly.

Cortes should have added sixth on the hour but blazed over with the goal at his mercy.

The damage had already been done as the Knights ended their season with an emphatic win.
