Late Gosnells goals sink Swan

Report by Matthew Corvi

Gosnells City have taken a step towards All Flags State League Division One inclusion after beating Swan United 3-0 in the first leg of the play-off at Walter Padbury Reserve on Saturday.

United will need to score three goals without any reply from Gosnells in the second leg to have a chance.

Gosnells City coach Alan Dunlop was pleased with his side’s performance.

“I said at the start, the clean sheet was the important thing and we did that,” he said.

“The goals at the end were the icing on the cake. But it’s only half time, the second leg will be a tough match.”

After a slow start to the game, Gosnells took the lead in the 20th minute through an Elliot Irland penalty.

Following a neat run, Tom Gibbins went down in the box after a late tackle, giving the referee no choice but to point to the spot.

Irland would make no mistake, placing the ball down the center of the goal to opening the scoring.

The game was an extremely physical encounter with little action and neither side had a meaningful shot for the remainder of the half.

The second half opened in a similar fashion to the first, with both sides attempting to control the ball but creating almost no chances.

With the game drawing to a close, Gosnells increased the pressure and claimed two important goals in the final five minutes of the match.

After a poor defensive mistake from Steve Shore, Willie Farmer placed the ball under the arms of Alec Radonich, giving his side their second goal of the game in the 88th minute.

United were stunned by the late goal and Gosnells took advantage, scoring their third and final goal of the game just thirty seconds after the restart.

After some neat play out wide, Josh Parfitt scored a simple tap in, ensuring Gosnells would go into the second leg in a perfect position to reach the final.
