Matildas crush Brazil in California
Football West News
The Westfield Matildas have scored a crushing 6-1 victory over Brazil to win the Tournament of Nations final in Carson, California this morning.
WA striker Lisa De Vanna and former Perth Glory attacker Caitlin Foord each scored twice, while star Perth forward Sam Kerr and Katrina Gorry were also on target in an emphatic victory.
De Vanna is now the all-time top scorer in women’s national team history with 42 goals.
The victory was the Matildas’ third this week and followed a 1-0 win over the United States and 4-2 success against Japan.
Remarkably, the Matildas had fallen behind against Brazil when Camila Pereira fired through a crowd of players in the second minute, which only served to inspire coach Alen Stajcic’s side to tear apart their South American opponent.
De Vanna equalised for the Matildas just five minutes later when she pounced on the rebound after her penalty had been saved.
Foord edged Australia ahead in the 31st minute and three minutes later De Vanna made it 3-1 before Gorry’s 40th-minute goal left Brazil with a mountain to climb heading into the second half.
Foord got her second of the match in the 68th minute and Kerr completed the rout with a well-taken goal nine minutes before the end.
The victory earned the Matildas their first piece of tournament silverware since their 2010 Asian Football Confederation Asian Cup triumph.
The Matildas will return to Australia for a pair of friendly internationals against Brazil in September – at Penrith’s Pepper Stadium on Saturday, September 16 and at Newcastle’s McDonald Jones Stadium on Tuesday, September 19.
