Northern Redbacks lift the Cup
Report by Callum George
Northern Redbacks scored a comprehensive 4-0 win over NTC to lift the Bankwest Women’s Cup at Grindleford Reserve on Sunday.
Goals from player of the match Demi Vance, Eleanor Blackmore and Renee Leota completed a dominant display for the Redbacks.
Redbacks coach, Tim Hodgson was full of praise for his experienced side and especially best on ground, Demi Vance.
“We knew we were an older and more mature side and we were going to use that to our advantage,” he said.
“Demi showed us what she’s capable of today and she has been not only good for us but good for the league as well.”
Northern Redbacks looked the better of the sides from kick-off, with it only taking a couple of minutes for midfielder Demi Vance to register the first shot of the game, her long-range strike sailing just wide of the far post.
The Redbacks didn’t have to wait long to open the scoring as Eleanor Blackmore got on the end of a Carla Bennet corner, smashing home a header at the back post.
Things got even better for the Redbacks just moments later when Megan Miller’s shot was parried and into the path of Renee Leota who finished into an open net and doubled the lead.
NTC had a golden chance to draw one back when Annabelle Leek capitalised on an error from the Redbacks defense, leaving her one on one with the goalkeeper, however the shot was straight into the arms of Kathleen Waycott.
The NTC were struggling to cope with the physicality of the opposition and were lucky to enter the break only 2-0 down.
Things got even worse for the NTC after the break as player of the match Demi Vance found space on the left wing before working her way into the box and tucked the ball home at the near post.
Vance didn’t stop there, picking up her second goal just after the hour mark when she pounced on a loose ball, before lobbing the keeper with a superb chip from the edge of the area.
Northern Redbacks proved too strong for the NTC prevailing 4-0 winners to lift the 2017 Bankwest State Cup.
NTC coach Jessine Bonzas was confident her side learnt a lot from Sunday’s result.
“It was an opportunity for us to go out there under some extra pressure and obviously there’s some good things that we can take out of today,” she said.
