NTC win Women’s Night Series classic

Report by Ryan Borrett

Football West NTC lifted the 2018 Women’s Night Series trophy on Friday night after overcoming Northern Redbacks 4-3 in a thrilling final.

NTC stormed back from 3-2 down to score two goals in the last 10 minutes.

Winning captain Abbey Meakins made it 3-3 with a brilliant one-on-one finish past with the Redbacks keeper.

Then Annabelle Leek scored the decider in the 87th minute after latching on to an excellent through ball and slotting home at the near post.

Meakins won the Tracey Wheeler Medal for player of the match.

NTC coach Jessine Bonzas said she was incredibly proud of her team’s effort – especially as her team’s triumph came after they had thrown away a two-goal lead.

“That game had everything,” Bonzas said.

“I was really pleased with our opening 20 minutes and, of course, with how it ended.

“We showed lots of character to come back and fight to the end.”

NTC started the match with great intensity and took the lead in the 10th minute when winger Abbey Green scored from a low cross into the Redbacks area.

The young side doubled their lead in the 21st minute when Liana Cook headed over Redbacks keeper Kathleen Waycott from a long ball into the box.

But the Northern Redbacks steadied after those two early setbacks and showed their experience to keep their heads.

They pulled one back in the 25th minute when Emily Henderson pounced on a fumble by NTC keeper Morgan Aquina. Then 11 minutes later Renee Leota equalised following a classy first touch to turn her marker.

And NTC were stunned at the end of the first half when the Redbacks went 3-2 up through Shawn Billam’s powerful header from a free-kick.

The second half started slowly and both teams struggled to create chances.

It looked like the Redbacks would hold on until NTC showed their fight, led by Meakins, to come back and win the match

The Night Series success was extra special for NTC after they lost the 2017 final to Queens Park on penalties.

“It’s a brilliant confidence booster,” Bonzas added. “We hope we can take this experience into the players’ development going forward.”
