Chelsea flew out of WA overnight after an entertaining 1-0 win over Perth Glory in front of more than 55,000 fans at a rain-drenched Optus Stadium on Monday night.
Spanish World Cup winner Pedro scored the only goal inside the first five minutes and at that stage there may have been fears among the Glory ranks that the EPL side would take them apart.
Some of the Londoners’ one-touch football was a delight to watch, particularly in the first half with 17-year-old Callum Hudson-Odoi no doubt impressing new coach Maurizio Sarri on the left flank.
New signing Jorginho and veteran Cesc Fabregas pulled the strings for the FA Cup holders, for whom Mario Pasali and Ross Barkley hit the post. Glory keeper Liam Reddy also pulled off a brilliant stop to prevent Pedro grabbing a second.
Glory eventually found their feet and had their own moments late on as Chris Harold and Brendon Santalab went close on a night Perth’s fantastic new stadium turned Chelsea Blue.
