Sorrento have recovered from their trip to Geraldton for last weekend’s regional PS4 NPLWA match and are ready to take on Perth SC on Saturday, according to coach Jamie Harnwell.
The Gulls, who defeated Perth Glory 2-0 in the mid-west city as part of the Geraldton Football Festival, sit third on the league ladder with Perth right behind them on an equal 35 points.
Inglewood United and Floreat Athena sit in first and second place respectively, both on 39 points.
Harnwell said Sorrento were looking forward to a game against a long-standing rival.
“It was a big trip last weekend and obviously tough travelling but the players recovered well on Tuesday night and put in a bigger effort on Thursday,” he said.
“I think Perth will come out firing. Obviously for them being beaten 3-2 by Inglewood last week would have been disappointing.
“Both of us need to win to stay in touch with the top two so we’re both trying to play football with attractive sides and it should make for a good game.”
Perth SC coach Ramon Falzon said his side will be looking to bounce back after their result last weekend.
“It was a tough one to take in last week because even when we went down to 10 men in the second half we played really well, we were in possession and we created more chances than them,” he said.
“It was disappointing to come away empty-handed, but the boys are full of focus once again and they know there’s another big game coming against Sorrento.”
Falzon said the match is a must-win for Perth.
“Sorrento are in the exact same situation as us where both of us are four points behind Inglewood and Floreat, so a draw wouldn’t suit either of us.
“For us it’s important to push Sorrento behind us and focus on grabbing the three points to keep us in touch with the top two teams.”
In other round 20 matches this weekend, Armadale will take on Mandurah City at Alfred Skeet Reserve, Floreat Athena will host Subiaco at E&D Litis Stadium and ECU Joondalup will face Cockburn City at ECU Joondalup Football Stadium.
