Phoenix rise to defeat Ashfield

Report by Callum George

South West Phoenix have come from a goal down to record an impressive 3-1 win over Ashfield away from home.

Ashfield came out of the blocks firing on their home turf and were dominating possession early on, with South West Phoenix struggling to keep hold of the ball.

It didn’t take long for Ashfield to convert their dominance as a Dan Corbett cross was met by Ash Corker who set up a lovely cushioned header for Jay Lang, slamming a tremendous volley into the top corner from outside the box.

After the goal, the Phoenix managed to slowly work their way into the game with striker Nicola Gazzola causing headaches for the Ashfield defence on the counter attack.

Ashfield continued to have chances of their own as Jamie Stewart lobbed effort ricocheted off the post.

Phoenix were awarded a penalty minutes later as goal keeper Scott Rowe’s clumsy fowl on Gazzola left the referee no option but to point to the spot.

Gazzola stepped up to tuck the ball home into the bottom left corner.

Ashfield was the better of the two sides in the opening stages of the second half with striker Dan Corbett squandering a golden opportunity from six yards out just four minutes into the half.

The visitors made the home side pay as midfielder Jayden Presser got in behind the Ashfield defence before rounding the keeper and finishing into an open net to give the Phoenix the lead.

South West Phoenix managed to swing all momentum their way in the second half, the hosts struggling to find any rhythm.

With just over 15 minutes to go Gazzola was awarded another penalty as he weaved his way between Ashfield defenders before being fouled inside the area.

Gazzola stepped up once again, this time powering it home into the top net ensuring South West Phoenix went home with all three points.
