Queens Park clip Angels’ wings

Report by Edward Nixon

Queens Park maintained their unbeaten start to the Women’s Premier League season with a comfortable 4-0 win over Beckenham Angels at Coker Park on Sunday.

Katrina Jukic (2), Shannon May and Bec DiCarlo grabbed the goals as Queens Park remained top of the standings after seven rounds.

Queens Park Coach Ben Anderton said: “I’m really happy with how the girls played. It’s always difficult when a team puts 10 or 11 players behind the ball, but I thought we broke them down well.

“We went out there with a game-plan and they stuck to the plan.”

Having dropped just two points all season, Queens Park went into this contest full of confidence and bossed possession throughout.

On the other hand, Beckenham were coming off a 7-1 mauling at the hands of the Northern Redbacks. This explained their defensive mindset and they kept the ladder-leaders at bay throughout the first 20 minutes.

The hosts’ pressure finally paid off after 25 minutes as May found the back of the net after a clever cut-back from Jukic.

May would have had her second moments later but for a reflex save from Angels goalkeeper Jamie Campbell.

But Queens Park doubled their advantage just after the half-hour mark when Jukic earned a penalty then sent Campbell the wrong way from the spot.

Despite conceding several more chances, the Angels defence held firm until the half-time break.

Queens Park continued their dominance after the interval and almost grabbed their third goal when Jukic’s lob hit the woodwork.

The striker was again denied by the crossbar just five minutes later as her thunderous header crashed against Campbell’s goal.

Campbell produced several saves to keep Queens Park at bay, but there was nothing she could do to prevent the third goal of the afternoon as substitute Bec DiCarlo found the corner.

Fellow substitute Grace Bettu then missed a glorious opportunity before Jukic grabbed her second of the contest to round out a comfortable win for Anderton’s side.

Beckenham has now lost two in a row, but captain Tiana Botha says there are plenty of positives to take from the display.

“We knew coming into this game they were going to bring it to us, especially with us having some players absent,” she said.

“The scoreline certainly doesn’t suggest what the game looked like. We definitely had some good passages of play.”
