Queens Park maintain league leader status

Report by Tristan Wheeler

An early goal to Rebecca Bennett gave Queens Park a 1-0 win over Balcatta when they met on Sunday in the Bankwest Womens State Premier League at Grindleford Reserve.

Defeated coach Andrew Di Marco said the finishing ability of Queens Park was the difference maker in the match.

“I thought both teams were evenly matched in general play, but it came down to finishing chances,” he said.

“We had our chances to finish as well, and we didn’t put them away.”

Queen’s Park coach Ben Anderton praised the high level of play that his side displayed in the wet weather.

“Tough conditions, but the girls tried their best to keep the ball, which was really good to see,” he said.

“I was pleased with the intensity out there. We knew it was a small pitch, so they were looking for the diagonal ball, and we made sure that we didn’t leave any holes for them to play slip balls through.”

Queen’s Park took the lead in the 19th minute, when Bennett was played through and managed to clip the ball into the net to give her side the lead.

Her teammate Natasha Rigby nearly saw her cross hit the net, but Balcatta keeper Gabrielle Dal Busco just managed to tip it over for a corner.

In the 36th minute a Rigby cross found Bennett open in front of goal, but she headed the ball over.

The second half was quieter, with the ball being held up in the middle of the park.

Queens Park’s Jamie Lee Gale picked out Tia Stonehill with a pinpoint cross in the 52nd, but her flicked header was well saved by Dal Busco at the far post.

Balcatta’s best chance of the half came in the 59th with Ellie De Monte seeing her shot bounce harmlessly into the air directly in front of goal after receiving the ball from Shauni Read.

Queens Park substitute Katerina Jukic smashed a long range shot against the bar in the 68th minute, which was the closest that either side came to scoring in the second half.

The result maintains Queen’s Park’s status as league leaders, while Balcatta’s record slips to six losses and four wins.
