Redbacks too strong for Balcatta

Report by Bobby Stamatoski

Northern Redbacks come out on top in a fiery thriller at Celebration Park over Balcatta, recording a solid 2-1 win.

Northern Redbacks coach, Tim Hodgson wasn’t too pleased with his team’s performance despite the win.

“I thought we were actually very poor today, but it’s been a tough four days after the semi-final from Wednesday.

“We didn’t get into much rhythm at all in today’s game so I think we were not up to the standard we’re capable of.

“I thought Balcatta were very good. They’re a very young and developing team and I was impressed with the way they went about it.” he said.

In an end to end first half, it should’ve been Balcatta in front as early as the first minute. An awkward cross was misread by the goalkeeper and the ball fell kindly to star forward Ellie La Monte who only managed to hit the post from close range.

Just three minutes later, it was Larissa Walsh for the Northern Redbacks down the other end that saw her effort cannon off the cross-bar.

Both teams created a flurry of chances in the first half but were unlucky not to be rewarded with a goal.

Two minutes after the restart however, it was the Northern Redbacks that took the lead.

After a good run down the right from Eleanor Blackmore, she managed to get a shot away from a difficult angle that took a heavy deflection to beat the goalkeeper.

On 68 minutes, Balcatta levelled when La Monte muscled past her defender and the goalkeeper to slot the ball into the net.

Just three minutes later, Demi Vance unleashed a screamer from outside the box to give back the Northern Redbacks the lead.

Balcatta coach, Andrew Di Carlo was happy with his sides performance despite the defeat.

“Super. Really good. With a bit of luck, we could’ve easily won that game.

“We had three clear cut chances in the first half. Against a team like the Redbacks, you really have to put some pressure on them and if you can do that then you are in with a shot.

This win leaves the Northern Redbacks in second place on the league table behind Queens Park in top spot.
