Rockingham City have kept pressure on Gwelup Croatia at the top of the State League First Division with a strong 3-0 win away to Dianella White Eagles.
A double from captain James Harmer and an own goal from substitute Agid Garoud saw second placed City stay three points behind Gwelup with a huge clash between the two coming up next Saturday.
On a sunny winter’s day, Rockingham were on top early and hit the side netting after only a few minutes through speedy winger Koty Millard.
Both sides traded half chances before a penalty was awarded on seven minutes when Harmer was brought down just inside the box. Unfortunately for the visitors he put his spot-kick wide.
It didn’t matter, though, as less than 10 nine minutes later Rockingham went 1-0 up when a delightful pass from Ryan Kennedy found Harmer who finished well.
Harmer then had another chance that he sprayed wide as Rockingham turned the screws. Dianella’s Kyle Jackson had some half chances as the half wore on but City then got their second when a mistake by Saslo Tamba saw the ball roll to Harmer, who made no mistake.
In the second half Rockingham continued to chip away at a tiring and besieged White Eagles defence and with 11 minutes left the NPL WA hopefuls had their third – and again it was down to an error. The troublesome Millard broke down the right and his powerful low cross was somehow turned in to the back of the net by Garoud.
Rockingham continued to pepper the Dianella goal before full time and struck the crossbar.
City assistant coach Gary Christie played down the upcoming clash with Gwelup, even though victory will take them top on goal difference and within sight of automatic promotion to the NPL WA.
“We just had to focus for 90 minutes against Dianella and got the job done,” he said.
Rockingham host Gwelup at Lark Hill Sportsplex next Saturday, kick-off 3pm, while Dianella have a bye before a trip to Fremantle City on September 9.
