Sammut treble too much for City

Report by Bobby Stamatoski

Captain James Sammut scored a hat-trick as Gwelup Croatia proved too strong for Joondalup City in the Men’s State League Division One at the Croatian Sporting Complex.

Gwelup ran out comfortable 3-1 winners in some chilly conditions, although coach Taki Nicolaidis was not too bothered about how many they won by.

DIVISION ONE LADDER

“At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter if we score three, four or five. What was important for us was to get the three points,” he said.

“On any other given day we probably could’ve added a couple more but I was pretty proud of our performance.

“I thought we were quite strong in all areas and it was nice to come out on top.”

Asked about Sammut’s contribution, Nicolaidis agreed it was a typical captain’s performance.

He said: “We tweaked his role today by pushing him further up in his previous role. It’s the first time he’s played there this year and its working better. He is a class player and he isn’t club captain for no reason as well. Three good finishes and very happy with him. “

Summut needed only nine minutes to put the hosts in the driving seat when he followed up his initial effort to make it 1-0.

Gwelup doubled their lead on 23 minutes. A neat one-two with David Heagney was finished off well by Sammut and it was 2-0.

The visitors fought back however, and to their credit, they pulled one back 15 minutes before half-time in spectacular fashion. Nathan Hibbder connected well with an overhead kick that went in off the post to make it 2-1.

Gwelup’s pressing paid off in the second half as Sammut was able to waltz past his marker and coolly convert past the goalkeeper to make it 3-1 and and complete his hat-trick.

This dominant display keeps Gwelup neck and neck at the top of the table with Rockingham City, who beat Mandurah City 3-1.
