Sorrento keep their eye on the prize

Football West News

Sorrento are aiming for victory over Joondalup United to keep alive their PS4 NPLWA title hopes in a round 23 clash at Percy Doyle Reserve on Saturday.

Despite recent weeks being focused on the State Cup Final and the Westfield FFA Cup, Jamie Harnwell’s side has not taken their eye off the PS4 NPLWA prize.

Harnwell said players will be putting on their best performance over the next few games in order to be part of the squad that plays in the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 16.

“The boys had a light session this week because they’ve had a lot of work the last couple of weeks, so they’re excited going into the last four games of the season,” he said.

“We need to win this week, because last week all of the competition’s top contenders won and obviously if we lose a game that takes us too far away to realistically have a chance of winning the league or staying in the top four so it’s a massive game.”

Harnwell knows his side will face a tough battle after tasting defeat when the teams last met in round 10.

“Joondalup will be right in our face, they’re going to be physical, and they’ll want to upset us,” he said.

“They did it last time and beat us pretty convincingly so we’ve got a bit of a point to prove but I’m sure they’ll be up for the challenge.”

Joondalup United coach Nick Jennings said his mid-table side was aiming for improvement after taking just a point from their previous four matches.

“Individually we’ve done alright recently but this week I’m expecting a better team performance,” he said.

“We need to go back to what makes us good, which is being a complete team.

“A win this week would give us bragging rights and we’re not really playing for much else now at the end of the season.”

Jennings said he will be expecting a reaction from Sorrento.

“I think they’ll be fully charged tomorrow,” he said.

“We ended their unbeaten start to the season last time we met and deflated them a little bit so I think Jamie will have them fired up and they will be out for revenge.”

In other round 23 matches on Saturday, Armadale will take on Inglewood United at Alfred Skeet Reserve, Cockburn City  will host Stirling Lions at Dalmatinac Park and Floreat Athena and Mandurah City will meet at E&D Litis Stadium.

ECU Joondalup and Balcatta will go head to head at ECU Joondalup Football Stadium and Subiaco will host Perth SC at Rosalie Park.
