Spearwood achieve Masters three-peat

Report by Jayden Lihou

Spearwood Dalmatinac have clinched their third consecutive Masters Cup after defeating Joondalup United 2-1 at E&D Litis Stadium on Sunday.

With the scores locked at 1-1 and penalties looming, Michael Petkovic scored the winner in the 89th minute to ensure his side claimed a dramatic victory.

Spearwood coach Hugh Miller was delighted with how his team performed and thought his side deserved the cup win.

“I think for the duration of the game we had the better of the play,” he said.

“They did come back at us in the second-half which was a bit of a worry because once they scored we lost a bit of momentum.

“But the boys battled on and got the winner in the end and I’m very happy we did.

“Everyone did their bit today which was good, we didn’t have to depend on one player and it was a good team performance overall.

“This is the third time in a row we’ve won this cup and we won the league this year as well so the boys are absolutely thrilled.”

Joondalup started the match on the front foot and almost found the opener in the 14th minute when an Alan Crofts header was cleared off the line by Alex Hall.

Crofts was at it again in the second-half when he made his way into the box from the wing, but his effort was denied by the keeper.

Dulio Xavier scored the opening goal for Spearwood in the 67th minute when he curled a free-kick into the back of the net.

Spearwood’s lead was short-lived however, as Joondalup leveled the scores 10 minutes later when Crofts played a low cross to captain Gary Andrews, who scored with a deft shot.

Joondalup continued to pile the pressure on their opponents, but it would be Spearwood to find the winner in a counter attacking move.

Michael Micro made his way down the wing and crossed the ball to Petkovic, who showed composure to find the back of the net.

Joondalup coach Nick Jennings put their defeat down to missed opportunities.

“When we were on top we missed so many clear opportunities and in the 90th minute their player had the composure to take his chance,” he said.

“We didn’t retain the ball as well as we could, but I can’t fault anyone’s commitment so I feel no disappointment with how the players performed.

“The older you get the harder it is to lose, especially when you lose in the 90th minute.

“But they are a good bunch of players and will definately go again next season.”
