Tom’s Blog: Football West refs start UK tour
Football West News
A team of Football West referees is currently in the UK undertaking a referees development tour.
The group consists of nine referees as well as Football West Managers Referees Eddie Lennie and Mathew Cheeseman, the FFA’s A-League Assistant Referees Coach.
As part of the tour the referees will officiate matches and they began in West Yorkshire on the weekend.
One of the referees, Tom Robinson, is writing a blog for Football West during the trip. Here is his first instalment:
The 2018 Football West Referee’s UK tour started over the weekend.
After a long flight the boys arrived in Leeds on Friday night where we were welcomed in to the country by James Webb, Referee Development Officer from the West Riding County Football Association (WRCFA), who will be hosting the first leg of the tour.
James had a chat with us about what to expect while refereeing in England, and some info about our first games.
After a group dinner that night the team got a good night’s sleep in, before heading off to our first games on Saturday afternoon.
The games were County Challenge Cup fixtures, hosted by Whitkirk Wanderers, Swillington and Hunslet Club. Every game was a success, with some great football being put on display by the players. The clubs were very accommodating, and the guys appreciated the chance to enjoy some of the local hospitality.
Later that evening the group had a great night out in Leeds, sampling the night life in what is a fantastic city.
Sunday was another big day of cup officiating, this time in the Sunday County Cup. The games were watched by referee coaches from WRCFA, who were happy to report that the team again performed well, as did all the players involved. Honourable mention goes to Jatin, who was told by a player that he was “the best ref they’d had all season”.
After the games the boys treated themselves to a spa recovery session at Oulton Hall, taking advantage of the fantastic facilities a stone’s throw away from the hotel.
The tour kicks on next week, with more games to ref and sights to see, so be sure to tune in to the next instalment of Tom’s tour blog.
