Too easy for Queens Park against Balcatta

Report by Ryan Borrett

Queens Park solidified their place at the top of the Women’s Premier League with a 3-0 win over Balcatta at Coker Park on Sunday.

The league leaders were in control throughout the game and could have had more goals had their finishing been more clinical in the match.

Balcatta struggled to find their rhythm and create many chances against a very strong Queens Park defence that was composed for the full 90 minutes.

Queens Park coach Ben Anderton was content with his team’s solidity at the back but said his side could have made Balcatta pay even more.

“I’m very happy with the team’s performance and I thought everyone worked really hard, especially in the defensive aspects and creating turnovers,” he said.

“Unfortunately today we weren’t as clinical as we should have been, so I feel the score doesn’t fully reflect how well we played.”

Queens Park took the lead in the third minute when winger Tia Stonehill pounced on a mistake at the back to slot home.

The hosts doubled their advantage in the 16th minute through Katarina Jukic’s excellent long shot from outside the box that found the bottom left of the net, giving Balcatta keeper Gabrielle Dal Busio no chance.

“You think you’d be shocked seeing a goal like that but it’s come to be expected from her,” Anderton added.

Balcatta should have halved the two-goal deficit in the 28th minute as Izzy Foletta had a shot at an open net after Queens Park goalkeeper Danielle Cornish lost the ball, but she sprayed her effort wide.

Queens Park remained in control in the second half and midfielder Jaymee Gibbons added a third for her side in the 67th minute after she latched on to the end of a through ball and got her shot around the oncoming Dal Busio.

Balcatta coach Lisa Tana was frustrated in her side’s performance after their recent good form.

“It was definitely disappointing after a really good last few weeks,” she said.

“Queens Park were definitely up for it and their work rate was far superior today and it showed.”

Queens Park will look to continue their undefeated start to the season next week against Fremantle City, while Balcatta face a tough test against NTC Women.
