WA Masters bring home the cup

Football West News

The WA Masters have beaten Malaysia Ex-State & International Team 2-0 in last month’s Bob Mc Shane Cup in Kuala Lumpur.

It marked three years since WA’s last win in the fixture with former WA State Team, Floreat Athena and Perth Soccer Club coach Ken Worden joining the WA side as a guest player, helping them to victory.

WA started the stronger of the two teams and made the break through on 20 minutes.

A superb pass from Andy Thorburn through the middle of the park put Paul Mc Vittie on route to goal who placed his left-footed strike in the corner of the net.

The goal settled the travelling side giving Malaysia very few chances.

Goal keeper Paul Kelly kept his side in front with a handful of fantastic saves.

It took WA another 10 minutes to double their lead with a Darron Morris strike from 25 meters into the bottom corner of the goal.

In the second half the home side stretched the travelling Masters team but could not break through the solid defense.

WA pushed for a third goal with 15 minutes to go but to no avail.

Worden, who also enjoyed a successful coaching career spanning 20 years in Malaysia with Selangor and the Malaysian National Team was substituted on with 10 minutes to go at the age of 74.

The Bob Mc Shane trophy was handed to winning captain Jeff Smith during the post-match celebrations.
