WA State Amateur team host Malaysian rivals

Football West News

The WA State Amateur team will host Malaysian side NPNG FC in a friendly match at Wanneroo City’s Kingsway Sporting Complex on Friday night.

The game will be the first step in the formation of a squad selected from the Amateur Premier Division, which will travel to Malaysia in November as part of an annual State Amateur team trip.

WA State Amateur team coach Rob Pagnoni said only six players in Friday’s squad have played together against Malaysian opposition previously.

“For most of them, this will be their first game together so I can’t expect too much from the boys but I do want them to go out and enjoy themselves, play a decent brand of football and try to come away with a win,” he said.

“We had a great game against them last year where we beat them 1-0 on their turf so I’m sure they’ll want to repay us here on Friday.

“I’m expecting the Malaysian team to be very competitive. They’re very quick, skilful and good to watch.”

Pagnoni said the annual matches will continue to strengthen ties with the Asian football market.

“We would love to have Malaysian teams here in Perth more often,” he said.

“They have some very good footballers there, so to play against them is fantastic for our boys.

“We absolutely enjoy going over there to play each year and it will be great for them to get the chance to do the same here in Perth on Friday.”

The match will kick off at 7:15pm.
