Wanneroo win but settle for play-offs

Report by Max Hayden-Evans

Wanneroo City had to settle for a place in the play-offs after their bid for the State League Division Two title and automatic promotion came up just short.

Wanneroo kept their side of the bargain on Saturday afternoon as goals either side of half-time from Shakeel Alexander and Gareth Lloyd guided them to a comfortable 2-0 victory against Shamrock Rovers at Kingsway Reserve.

The win momentarily rocketed Wanneroo to the top of the table. However, a few hours later Olympic Kingsway saw off Curtain University 4-1 to end their season undefeated and take the crown.

At least Wanneroo will go into their two-legged play-off semi-final against Mandurah City in form. Saturday’s game made it 16 unbeaten.

The Roos began the game brightly, drawing a pair of sharp saves from Rovers goalkeeper Ben Robson. However, midway through the first stanza and Robson was powerless to stop Alexander, who delivered the breakthrough goal for Wanneroo by latching onto a well-weighted through ball from Connor Lynch to deftly finish.

Wanneroo continued to create several chances and on another day the scoreline could have been far less flattering for a Rovers outfit who looked dour going forward.

Lloyd then stepped up to produce the highlight of the game, cracking a long-range effort into the top corner to put the game to bed.

After the match Wanneroo coach Tim Kantor was full of praise for his side.

“It’s fantastic to get a good result, I think we dominated the whole game. We kept possession, created a lot of chances and we got two and were never really pressed.

“Our whole season has been absolutely phenomenal. To finish with 52 points out of 60 is just a phenomenal achievement. Any other season and we’d have it wrapped up, but there are two good sides in this competition.

“We’ve got so much depth and stability and the club is looking forward to the future. We’re going to the playoffs and we’ll give it our best shot.”

The other play-off semi-final will be between Dianella White Eagles and Swan United.
