West Aussie goes viral at World Cup

Football West News

A West Australian who is in Russia to watch the World Cup has become a social media hit.

Martin Leeson, who lives in Geraldton, was filmed in a Moscow bar packed with Colombian supporters as he celebrated England’s penalty shoot-out win on Tuesday.

Leeson, originally from the UK, was labelled “the only England fan in the bar”.

The video, which was also uploaded to YouTube, had more than 4,400 likes, 2,700 retweets and almost 3,000 comments retweets.

A video from just moments before showed the bar erupting when England’s Jordan Henderson missed his spot-kick. Sadly for the Colombians their nerve failed them and England got through to the last eight.

At least Leeson, a former coach of Football West Amateur side La Fiamma, won’t have to  worry about being in a bar full of Swedes for England’s quarter-final on Saturday – the Leeds United fan was able to buy a ticket off a disconsolate Colombian after the match.
